My Local Memories
When I was a youngster I remember the well in Allithwaite on the green at the junction with back of orchard road and church road which is now covered over and has flowers planted on top of it and going down beck hill to the stream there to catch tiddlers.
We would walk through Bennetts yard to the fields beyond the stream wandered along and went past Wraysholme farm cutting through under the Humphry Head road bridge onto the marsh where it drained into the sea.
This used to be a favourite spot for us to go as there used to be Rifle pits used by the army as this was a practice shooting range our favourite pastime was to dig used bullets out of the banking in front of the targets.
I remember an old railway line there just behind the targets I never knew where it went or came from there was just so much of it left I have not been there recently I think it’s probably disappeared now.
One of the games we used to play was a game called mumbly peg this consisted of about a 3”- 1”x1” square piece of wood the ends tapered off and placed on the ground using a stick to tap one end so it jumped into the air then try and hit it to see who could knock it the farthest.
Opposite the now post office there was a lovely well looked after bowling green where local people used to play.
On the top side of that there was a niece putting green sadly all gone now
My Grand Father had a market garden where Hazelgarth estate is now he used to sell some of the best vegetables in the district also my Uncle used to grow the best tomatoes in the district they had a marvellous taste with them, Chrysanthemums were his speciality he used to be a regular visitor to Cartmel show every year to show Marrows Cucumbers & his Chrysanthemums, Always getting firsts & second rosettes even though there was heavy competition.
As kids we used to roam on the Lots as there was a Footpath from the quarry to the top road from Grange, Sadly the quarry is now filled in with sawdust and old cars the sawdust was tipped in by the local sawmill and made it very dangerous to go in I remember one of my friends walking on it and his leg went down a hole in it and he got a very badly burned leg, Now it is a habitat for wildlife which is fine but it could have been so much better. Also the footpath has been removed how or why I do not know although the stile is still there next to the old lime kiln. I remember playing in the old orchard up above the smaller quarry playing at cowboys & Indians with our bows & arrows. We used to get the branches for the bows from Blenkett wood also there were some very straight and thin branches that made good arrows.
There is a cave in Blenkett where we used to roam below Kirkhead tower it is little known these days but it is there.
Some of my favourite Memories are when the Carnival was run I remember my Father riding a penny farthing one year and another was when my Farther & Uncle dressed up as a horse it was brilliant.
